Press, Reviews & Press Kit — Kam Fai Dim Sum, Gresson Street

Coverage, food vlogs, platform ratings and guest reviews for our Wan Chai shop — plus an important note on the two restaurants sharing the name Kam Fai.

Important: same name, different shop

The Gresson Street shop is open and trading daily. The closure reported by Hong Kong media in April 2026 concerned Kam Fai Dim Sum Restaurant on Spring Garden Lane — a separate business.

Those reports quoted the Spring Garden Lane owner's daughter saying that the Gresson Street shop had once been a branch of their family business but later changed hands, so the two now share only a name and no operational connection.

Everything on this website — address, phone numbers, hours, menu, chef background — refers to the Gresson Street shop only. If a search result tells you “Kam Fai Dim Sum is closing”, it is not about us.

Short film from inside the shop

The most difficult thing to fake in a dim sum shop is its rhythm. Prep starts at 1 a.m., the first baskets open at 5 a.m., and from then on a new round comes out of the cabinet every few minutes until the steam goes off at 3:30 p.m. This clip is that rhythm in under a minute.

Press coverage

Paris Eater — 11 of the Best Restaurants In Hong Kong (January 2026)

A Paris-based food writer placed the Gresson Street shop on a shortlist of eleven Hong Kong restaurants, noting that it opens daily from early morning until late afternoon, takes no reservations, and that two shops carry the name. This remains our most prominent English-language mention, read mainly by European and North American travellers.

Hong Kong media, April 2026 — Wan Chai closures

Sing Tao Headline and HK01 reported that Kam Fai Dim Sum Restaurant on Spring Garden Lane, in business for more than twenty years and run by a chef formerly of the now-closed Lung Moon Restaurant in Wan Chai, faced closure over a rent increase. After the owner's daughter posted about it on social media, crowds went out of their way to visit. The same coverage clarified that the Gresson Street shop had been a family branch in the past but has since changed hands.

Food vlogs and tastings

Both videos below are in Cantonese or Mandarin with Chinese captions, but the footage speaks for itself if you want to see the shop before visiting.

Self-funded tasting, Gresson Street (June 2026)

A Hong Kong channel filmed the shop and framed the episode around eating “the flavours of the old days at neighbourhood prices”, then asked on camera whether any Wan Chai locals still remembered how the old Lung Moon Restaurant tasted — and whether these were the same chefs. That question recurs among Wan Chai regulars and is, indirectly, the clearest account of where our technique comes from.

Handmade dim sum breakfast review (November 2025)

A reviewer using a five-level scoring system — which explicitly separates pre-made factory food from “authentic technique with fresh ingredients” — visited the shop at 6–14 Gresson Street and worked through har gow, quail egg siu mai, supreme fish maw chicken and the fried egg with beef rice.

What reviewers keep filming

  • The translucency of the har gow wrapper and how much shrimp is inside.
  • Quail egg siu mai — treated by several channels as our signature item.
  • Supreme fish maw chicken, an old tea house dish rarely seen now.
  • Clay pot rice and the fried egg with beef rice.
  • The 5 a.m. opening — mentioned in nearly every video.

Three themes that repeat

  • Fresh and handmade: the shrimp in the har gow and siu mai is the detail guests mention most.
  • Inexpensive: several reviews put five dishes at roughly HK$100.
  • Unassuming and local: reviewers describe a plain little room full of regulars — which is exactly why the regulars stay.

Two practical points reviewers raise

  • Bring cash. Cash is the safest option; AlipayHK and Alipay are also accepted.
  • Ask for the English menu. Chinese, English and Korean menus are available in the shop.

Press kit and filming

We welcome newspapers, magazines, broadcasters, online media, YouTube channels and travel platforms. Please contact us first so we can keep the dining room workable for guests.

Best windows to film

  • 01:00–04:00 — mincing, mixing and hand-folding. The best footage of actual craft, by appointment only.
  • 05:00–06:30 — the first baskets and the first regulars. Atmospheric, and the room is not yet full.
  • 13:30–15:30 — after lunch service, best for interviews with the chef.
  • Please avoid 07:30–09:30 and 11:00–13:00, the two peaks.

What we can provide

  • High-resolution images of the shopfront, steam cabinet and dishes, with written permission.
  • Chef background, the Lung Moon connection and the daily schedule — see the about page.
  • Current items and prices — see the menu.

Frequently asked questions

Has Kam Fai Dim Sum closed?

The Gresson Street shop is open daily. The April 2026 closure reports concerned the Spring Garden Lane restaurant of the same name, a separate business.

Why are there two Kam Fai shops?

Ours was once a branch of that family business but changed hands; the two are now independent and share only the name.

Why do the ratings differ so much between sites?

Review volumes differ enormously: Google has 390+ reviews at about 4.5, Tripadvisor has single-digit review counts scoring 4.0 to 4.8, and OpenRice sits near 3.5. Small samples swing hard.

Is it cash only?

Cash is safest, and reviewers often mention it. AlipayHK and Alipay are also accepted.

Can I film the chef making dim sum?

Yes, by appointment. The 1 a.m. to 4 a.m. window is when the folding happens.

May I republish images from this site?
